President Ann Sims accompanied 35 members, guests and ladies to the Isle of Wight staying at The Ocean View Hotel, Shanklin which was situated on the cliff top overlooking the English Channel. We had six mixed matches which involved 6 rinks. President Ann acting as Captain of the day at our first match against Newport BC. Further matches were played against Sandown BC, Ryde Marina BC, Shanklin BC, Plessey BC, Cowes and Ventnor BC.
All of the clubs made us very welcome and in the majority of cases their greens were of a good standard. With the weather being kind to the tourists all matches were played in good conditions. Highest-up rinks for Chelmsford were rewarded with specially purchased and printed white baseball caps with one being presented to the host captain of the day. This year President Ann provided hang round the neck ‘craft’ owls to Chelmsford’s worst losing rink.
Entertainment in the hotel consisted of the Presidents Bucks-Fizz reception on the first Saturday evening with further entertainment being provided by the hotel each evening which the tourists could join in. On the Friday evening the Tourist Presentation evening took place with President Ann awarding the ‘Fred Gibney Tourist Trophy’ and M&S vouchers donated by Mailys Gibney to the Men’s Club Captain Phil Kyffin. Pam Rout again kept track of everyone’s scores and worked out our winner. Jan Walker organised the daily betting for the overall scores and who would be the highest-up rink. After the fines for misdemeanours were announced and collected by Ann Sims a good sum was donated by the tourists to President Ann’s charity ‘Kids Inspire’.
Plans are in place for our 31st tour in 2018 to Norfolk starting on Sunday 19 to Saturday 25 August staying at the Dunston Hall Hotel, Norwich. A full complement of 34 members and partners have already signed up for this tour. Still available from our allocation and for couples are double and twin rooms but all single rooms have been allocated with no more available. Six 6 rink mixed matches have been arranged kicking off with Connaught BC, Attleborough on Sunday followed by Caister-on-Sea BC, Aldiss Park BC, Dereham, Wymondham Dell BC, Freethorpe BC and finishing with Thorpe Recreation BC, Norwich on Friday.
It was announced at the Isle of Wight that the tour to Norfolk would be the last one that Jan and Ray would organise and they requested that a member or members come forward to organise the 2019 tour. At the time of compiling this report no member has come forward to take on this task which means that the Norfolk tour may well be last UK Chelmsford BC tour unless this vacancy can be filled.
